Henry Champion papers, 1719-1862.

This collection contains the papers of Revolutionary War soldier Henry Champion and his family. Champion was a resident of Colchester, Connecticut. After resigning from the army, Champion married Abigail Tinker of East Haddam in 1781. Together they had ten children. The oldest papers in the collection are associated with Champion's father, also Henry Champion (1723-1797). The elder Champion also participated in the Revolutionary War. The collection contains an orderly book (1778-1779) used in several Connecticut and New York locations. It is a record of General Orders and Brigade and Regimental Orders. According to the Crofut inventory of the collection, returns for Negroes in the Army was ordered. Correspondence is between Champion and his son, Aristarchus, sons-in law David Deming (and wife Abigail), Elizur Goodrich, Joseph Trumbull, and Robert Watkinson. Deeds included in the collection are from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, and the Western Reserve. Estate inventories, including Champion's estate, are included as well.
